Snow Conditions – Ski, Fatbike 2/11

Skin-to-Ski on Ascutney: The top of the ski area is piles of drifts separating glare ice crust. Out of the wind, and on the lower slopes you’ll find almost enough snow. Lower angle swizzles are a joy on the 6″ powder, but aggressive turns will spin out on the crust under neath. On steeper terrain you’ll break through the crust and lose control. A mixed bag.  Please use the skin track that starts to the right of the rope tow, above the warming hut.

Rope Tow slopes are groomed and great.  The tow runs Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 12pm-4pm. Winterfest Saturday from 10-2 come join the fun.

Fatbike Trails – most have been snowshoe packed or rolled and don’t need studs.  Fatscutney race kicks off at 9:00, so the trails will be all open by 11:00.  Demos – as part of Winterfest, three bikee companies will have free demos near the rope tow warming Hut Saturday 2/11

XC Skiing – Many kms. of groomed-but-not-track-set, shared with the fatbikes.  A couple of loops on and near the Mile-Long Field can be skated.

Snowshoe – share with the fatbikes, or take off on the untracked trails from the Town Forest parking lot off Coaching Lane or up the ski area (but please follow existing tracks where possible to conserve the powder for skiers.)  A one-mile snowshoe loop is marked with red flags, starting near the rope tow base.

Tubing and Sledding – The slope from the skier bridge down toward the hotel is groomed and open to all to bring their sleds/tubes.

All these activities are offered FREE OF CHARGE, but we encourage you to help make them possible with a DONATION in the black box at the warming hut.  Please remember that for most of this, you are out there on your own, at your own risk, so please be careful and dress warmly, with extra gear in your pack.
